Shameless Self-Promotion

Last week I did an interview with Brian Schwartz who published a short editorial about my work in the Daily Camera. The paper he cited was my Economic Inquiry article with Christian End, "A Winning Proposition: The Economic Impact of Successful National Football League Franchises". One interesting thing to come out of the interview was that I realized when I give estimates for the dollar impact of a team winning, I typically use the real income number. Using real income makes sense from a research point of view, but people do not think in 1984 dollars. Inflation has more than doubled the dollar amount in the last 25 years, so I should probably adjust the numbers to state nominal income.

You can find the editorial here (it is the last one), and you can find Brian's blog entry about it here.

Impact of Team Success on the Local Economy

My paper with Christian End analyzing the impact of the local team's success on the economy is in the current issue of Economic Inquiry. A couple of links related to that paper were published today. At the Sports Economist, Brian Goff discusses his view on the paper. Also at CNNMoney, in a story about the impact of the Saints' Super Bowl run on small business, I am quoted discussing the impact of team success to personal income.

Shameless Self Promotion II

I was quoted in the Sunday edition of the New Orleans Times-Picayune on the impact of the Saints' success this season on the local economy. I am a little worried about not doing too many more of these interviews as it seems to be bad luck. Iowa lost their first game a week and a half after a story quoting me, and the Saints lost their first game this past Saturday before the story was even published.

I was mentioned in a story in the Daily Iowan about the impact of the Iowa football team on the economy of the area.

White Flag Trades

Last week the Missouri S&T promotions department did a profile on the ongoing research of my undergraduate student, Samantha Schussele. She is doing a study on the effects on attendance of a White Flag Trade. A White Flag Trade is defined as a trade by a team of a key player for prospects when the team is still in contention for the pennant. Her research is continuing, and so far the effects on attendance are not clear.
